Andrology
Andrology is a name for the medical specialty that deals with male health, particularly relating to the problems of the male reproductive system and urological problems that are unique to men.
We have a dedicated andrology laboratory at the IVF unit. This unit deals with procedures related to the evaluation of semen. A comprehensive semen analysis by the latest World Health Organization (WHO), 2021 criteria is performed here.
Sperm are very small, yet they carry a large quantity of genetic information to the egg. With so much DNA is packed into a tiny sperm cell, not everything arrives intact as intended. Some men might have a normal sperm count, motility, and morphology, and still have large amounts of sperm DNA damage. This is tested by the DNA Fragmentation test, which evaluates the percentage of breaks present in sperm DNA. Research has looked at how the amount of damage observed in sperm DNA can serve as a marker for male infertility.
Sperm processing for various fertility enhancing procedures is also done at the Andrology Lab. These include sperm preparation for IUI, IVF and ICSI. Sperm freezing as part of fertility treatment and for future use is also done regularly.
